Joel Salatin is a role model for many of the new farmers in the world, and the face and voice behind Polyface, his family farm in Virginia (USA). Prolific writer (he’s written more than ten books, including Folks, This Ain’t Normal, recently published in Spanish by Diente de León) and provocative speaker, Salatin has been featured in several high-impact documentaries and books. His public appearances are uniquely vibrant, sharing his more than forty years of experience innovating ethically in the practice of animal husbandry.
In Folks This Ain’t Normal, synthesis of his thoughts and experience, Salatin speaks about a sustainable way of farming, the importance of eating food that is healthy, local and seasonal, of caring for the environment and how essential it is to live in harmony with nature and with the people we love.
Joel Salatin has been developing for fifty years his own methodology in his farm Polyface, which produces nutritious food and, at the same time, regenerates the fertility of the land where it is produced, always with a clear focus towards profit.
Darren J. Doherty has an ample experience designing, developing and managing organic projects across the globe. During his career he has focused on transforming large areas of land into profitable and regenerative enterprises. He is a writer, educator and fifth generation farmer in the Bendigo region in Australia. He participated in the design and development of more than 3000 projects over more than 50 countries, including the design of a livestock farm with more than a million hectares in Australia and projects involving forests used for food production and education in Vietnam.
In 2013 he sets up Regrarians, a non profit organization aimed at supporting farmers with low income and also to help developing countries through education and consulting, grants and courses on the subject of agrarian enterprise planning. In 2018 he joins Organic Managers, a team of professional farmers from Aragón and Catalonia (Spain). This team is managing several organic farms in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Aragón.
The meeting point for the masterclass is the “sala multifunctional” located at Es Mercadal (Menorca). All the speaking sessions will take place in this venue.
We will depart from here on two occasions to visit two farms: Son Felip y Algaiarens.
Main venue
Sala multifuncional Es Mercadal
Avinguda del Metge Camps, s/núm
07740 Es Mercadal, Menorca
Visits to the host farms (Son Felip and Algaiarens) will allow us to go from the theoretical sessions to the specifics of a living example such as a fully operative organic agrobusiness where many of the strategies Joel and Darren will be talking about are already being implemented.
Darren J. Doherty is a member of the team who is guiding both farms, and therefore you’ll be able to see a real example of a project that is managed under the principles he is going to teach us during the masterclass.
In the afternoon of day 1 we’ll visit Son Felip. To improve the experience, attendees will be divided into two groups, and each group will have the opportunity to listen to both speakers while they tell us about keyline design (Doherty) and holistic management and grazing (Salatin).
In the afternoon of day 2 we’ll visit Algaiarens. Same scheme, two groups which will listen to Joel while he explains cover crops in an almond farm where there are also pigs, and to Darren speaking about organic grain crops.
Lunch is included in the masterclass fee. Dinner is not included, there are many restaurants in the area, plus the hotels.
Please, if you have any type of food intolerance, or any other specific need, contact us through info@editorialdientedeleon.com.

If you are a new farmer, a future farmer, an experienced farmer, an established environmental activist, a conscious consumer, or the owner of a small piece of land that could produce more (and more efficiently), then this is your course
Son Felip and Algaiarens are two farms which belong to an agrarian project covering 1000 Has located north of Ciutadella, between the emblematic beaches Algaiarens and Cala Pilar, in the island of Menorca.
A project where three families of farmers and the technical team (Organic Managers) develop farming methods which are productive in environmental, social and economic terms, based on the production of traditional foods from the area with high nutritional profiles, such as ancestral varieties of wheat, olive trees, almond trees and organic melons, as well as raising cattle, pork, lamb and traditional menorquin horses.
The key of the project, which has been functioning for 4 years, is the regeneration of the farming soils by using tools like holistic management, keyline design and permaculture.
Organic managers is a nonprofit organization created with the aim of spreading and practicing organic agriculture and helping farmers so that they can overcome the challenge of transitioning their management from conventional towards organic.
We offer education and consultancy, as well as the opportunity to visit and get to know our projects (such as Son Felip and Algaiarens). We are proving that the methods taught by Joel Salatin and Darren J. Doherty are applicable in the Mediterranean region by using a methodology that we have developed, which is adapted to the specific climatic, geographic and socioeconomic characteristics of our area.
We defend agricultural practices that are real, profitable and at the same time sustainable and respectful towards nature, a true local agriculture.
Our goal is to do our part in the task of extending the foundation of a sustainable agriculture, therefore improving both people’s health and the health of the planet.
Diente de León is a publishing program and an active educational platform devoted to ecology, medicinal plants, health, nutrition, body and mind.
These topics are catalyzers for the advancement of a society which aims at connecting with the threads of a healthy and fulfilling life. We bring authors in which we believe, because of their expertise but also because of their sensitivity and outstanding communication skills.
Make the most of this masterclass by connecting to clients and collaborators or to promote your organization. We offer a space dedicated to all attendees so that they can get to know your project
